Annual Review 2020

1. Membership

Despite the year we have had with the effects of Covid-19 on our ability to play golf, membership held up with 129 members at the end of the year

2. Accounts

A copy of these are now available from which you will note the absence of any accounts for the Away Day. Carus Green near Kendal was booked and was postponed until 10th August 2021. Please note in your diaries!

In accordance with our normal custom we have been pleased to be able to allocate £350 as a donation to the club to assist towards the purchase of a much needed computer for the Club Secretary’s Office. My thanks to Bob Lee for all his diligent work as Treasurer.

These accounts have been audited and our thanks to Gordon Chapman for doing this. Unless we have objection, these accounts will be taken as read. Thank you

3. Matches and Competitions

This won’t take long! All matches with local clubs were cancelled despite some of our opponents holding out for some time before accepting the inevitable – more in hope than realistic analysis.

All main Seniors Club competitions were cancelled given the closure for most of the year of the clubhouse and unavailability of Catering facilities. After the course was reopened, following the first lockdown, we did manage to play 5 18 hole competitions the winners being Alan Booth, Jim Reynolds, Captain Gary Denman, Billy Snape & Colin Mitchell. Runners up were; Peter Mosley, Billy Snape, Jim Reynolds, Captain Gary Denman & Paul Randall.

Despite adverse weather conditions impacting on the course, we did manage to play 5 9 hole comps (the first one being an 18 hole comp, reduced to 9 holes only, due to the Covid-19 restrictions) - the winners being; Tim Handford, Roy Hill, Billy Snape, Jim Reynolds and Martin Lupton! Runners up were Jackie Mitchell, Malcolm Aldred Peter Mosley, Brian Jones & Captain Gary Denman.

Some recurring names there; Billy Snape & Jim Reynolds to name just two plus the Skipper’s golf must have benefited during his year of office given his performance?

Pleased also to see some new names there too! Congratulations to all! Fixture List for next year is now available. Let’s hope for a more normal year? My thanks to Peter Mosley for all his efforts in arranging the Fixtures

4. Winter Programme 2020/2021

Due to restrictions, the programme was cancelled but I am pleased to confirm that all speakers agreed to their talks being postponed to the next close season

5. Committee

Once again sincere thanks to all the members of the Committee for their hard work during the year, Ken Wilkes included who didn’t get a specific mention earlier, and I am very pleased to confirm they have all agreed, myself included, to stand for a further year. Being unable to request a vote, perhaps anyone who objects would write direct to me, otherwise, I will take it as a motion to reappoint us all is passed!

Once again, thank you to our Section members for all the support throughout what has been a very difficult year

News from the Seniors - Autumn 2020

We are coming towards the end of the 2020 season and what a strange one we have had with all the Covid – 19 restrictions impacting, significantly, on our Fixture List. As I write this, we are in dialogue with all local clubs with whom we have regular Fixtures, home & away, about the 2021 Fixture List and, whilst we hope these will go ahead as planned once agreed with the other clubs, all depends on prevailing conditions regarding the virus restrictions etc.

The final 18 hole competition has just been completed and we are now looking towards the Seniors Winter 9 Hole competition. This, including the prize and the Freda Newlove Trophy for the highest cumulative scores from 4 of the 6 comps scheduled on the first Tuesday Monthly. As the first two monthly Winter Lunches and Talks have been postponed because of current guidelines, in addition, we will schedule 9 hole competitions on the third Tuesday monthly i.e. there will be 9 hole comps every fortnight but with only the first Tuesday monthly comps qualifying for the Freda Newlove Prize/Trophy.

These 9 hole competitions are a great way to include those members who feel unable, for whatever reason, to compete in 18 hole comps and, wherever possible, we will make them qualifying competitions for handicap purposes. Weather here is the main influence but we look forward to as many of you as possible joining us and having a bite to eat with your beer in the clubhouse afterwards, if possible

Winter Lunchtime Talks

As above, the October & November talks have now been postponed to next year. The Christmas Lunch/Quiz is still under review as will be the remaining lunches and more about the status of these will be advised in the usual way via email.

In the meantime, keep well and stay safe and we look forward to seeing many of you down at the club throughout the close season.

Take Care!

The winner of the Freda Newlove Trophy for the Best 4 out of 5 cumulative scores in the Winter 9 Hole Competition was Jim Young (see separate photo – taken within the current social distancing rules!) Well done Jimmy for a consistent performance throughout. Unfortunately, it may be some time for him to be able to enjoy his prize – Champagne Afternoon Tea in Cloud 23 in the Beetham Tower/Hilton Hotel. I am sure it will be all the better for the waiting?!

In the meantime thank you to all for your continued support of this competition during the close season. We had some very good fields for the 9 hole competitions; better luck next time! Given the very wet weather, we were quite lucky that only one of the comps had to be cancelled!

Thank you also for all the support for the monthly lunchtime talks. Our apologies to all those disappointed that the March talk scheduled to be given by Cyril Hill had to be cancelled, not least to Cyril for all his hard work! We will do our best to reschedule in the future.

Normally, at this time of year, our attention would be turning to the start of the season, the traditional ‘curtain raiser’ being the Away match at Hale. This was called off quite quickly and this reiterated the need for the Seniors Committee to review our strategy for the year and, even before the current lock down and based upon the social distancing rules newly introduced at the time of our meeting, it was unanimously agreed to cancel all the Seniors’ Fixtures for the foreseeable future. Since then, of course, the Golf Course has had to be closed with no clear idea when such measures will be lifted.

Some of our long-standing supporters from other golf clubs had already reserved their places for the Ashton on Mersey Seniors Open. This, of course, is another casualty of the virus restrictions. We have offered them the opportunity to have their entries transferred to the fixture provisionally earmarked for 7th June 2021. Whilst we do like to be organised, this could prove to be the most advanced forward planning ever experienced?!!

Although the Seniors Away Day scheduled for 11th August at Carus Green Golf Club has not yet been cancelled, in all likelihood, it is unlikely to proceed but agreement has already been reached with the venue, should it prove necessary, to roll over to 2021 and this will be confirmed to you all at a future date.

If there should be any other developments involving the Seniors, we will of course arrange for these to be communicated to you in the usual way or via this newsletter. In the meantime it just remains for me, on behalf of the Seniors Committee, to wish you all well, stay safe and we very much look forward to meeting you on the course when circumstances permit.

Take Care!
